Operational finance checks often stop at “it ties.” That is necessary, but it is not sufficient. Reviewers—and later, auditors—ask why a difference cleared, who authorized the clearing, and whether the same pattern will reappear next month.
Look for unexplained clearing
When a suspense balance disappears into miscellaneous income without a ticket or email trail, the ledger looks tidy and the control story collapses. Train reviewers to flag clearings that lack a named owner and a dated source document.
Ask what the total cannot tell you
Vendor spend can look stable while a single supplier absorbs three new entities. Cash can reconcile while float counts skip a location. The financial auditing guidance we teach for operational finance checks emphasizes pairing totals with a short narrative field on every material exception.
Write for the next person
If your note only makes sense to you, it is not documentation. Use a fixed structure: what we saw, why it matters, what we did, what remains open. That habit is practiced in Operational Audit Mastery’s walkthrough module.
